Signs that you have hypothyroidism

Look out for the following warning signs as they show that your thyroid gland is not working as it should be.

If you wake up after getting your daily recommended sleep hours at night and still feel exhausted all day long, then you need to get your thyroid gland checked.

Scientists believe that your thyroid hormone is responsible for production of serotonin in the brain. If your serotonin levels drop, you may feel unusually depressed. Thus, if you feel very gloomy and depressed your thyroid gland may not be functioning as it should because an under active thyroid gland means low levels of thyroid hormone which means low levels of serotonin.

Brain fog and forgetting things means you may have an under active thyroid gland. When patients with an under active thyroid gland are treated they experience sharp cognitive brain functions.

If you get muscle aches, fatigue, have gained weight, and have a low sex drive, chances are that your thyroid is not producing the required amount of thyroid hormone.

Itchy skin, dry skin, and cracked heels are all signs that your thyroid hormone levels are below normal.

If you experience constipation it means that the motility in your gut has slowed down. Slowed gut mobility results when there is not sufficient level of thyroid hormone in the blood. Constant constipation is another warning sign that your thyroid may not be as active as it should be.

As a woman if your periods are:

  • Long (unusually)
  • Heavier blood flow

Your thyroid hormone supply may be low. Additionally, some women experience periods close together when their thyroid gland becomes under active. They also experience more cramps. If you have long periods, heavier flow, more cramps, or periods which are closer together, then you need to get your thyroid gland checked.

According to one theory when your thyroid hormones are too low, your heart beat slows down. This negatively affects the pumping strength of the heart. It also negatively affects the flexibility of your blood vessels. As a result, you develop hypertension. If you have hypertension, your thyroid hormone may be too low which is serving as the cause.

Cold intolerance is another sign that you suffer from low thyroid hormone levels. If you feel very very cold and get chills you need to get your thyroid gland checked.

If you want to sleep all the time it means your energy levels are low. Low energy levels means you do not have enough thyroid hormone in your blood.

If your diet has not changed, and your calorie intake is the same, but you have gained weight, then you need to get your thyroid checked. Low thyroid hormone in the blood leads to weight gain.

If your hair has become

  • Dry
  • Brittle and/or
  • Falls off easily

Then you may suffer from hypothyroidism. It is possible that your hair dresser is the first person to tell you that your hair is falling out. If he/she does then it is a warning sign that you need to get your thyroid gland checked by a doctor.

Woman who have trouble getting pregnant need to get their thyroid hormone levels checked. An under active thyroid gland, which leads to low thyroid hormone in the blood, makes it very difficult for women to get pregnant.
